Who owns a colour, a sentence, the view of a building?
The use of the copyright of artistic contents has become a fight for civil rights. As part of this process the free access of individuals to the content of arts has been further and further reduced due to the influence of the commercial exploitation industries. Besides the tightening of copy- and exploitation rights – not always to the benefit of the creative mind- and the restriction of the right to a private copy, the definition of which content is protected by these rights has been extended more and more.
At the same time artistic sound- and picture-contents have become almost infinitely reproducible. This informal revolution is leading to the breakdown of commonly used channels of distribution and to artistic products being sold at “dumping prices”.
On the other hand, this informal revolution offers the chance to promote art without large funds.
The “Art&Education” group of the apprenticeship network of the Technical University Darmstadt has the task of developing new concepts for marketing and distribution, using these changing conditions. “Art&Education” consists of a team of apprentices who work as trainees and of several experts with many years of experience as coaches in information technology. The coaching is carried out based on methods that were developed by the Fraunhofer ISST. Sponsors wishing to support the “Art&Education” group are always welcome.
